Ral Partha

25mm Ancient Command Packs

By Lance McKenzie

Some time ago, Ral Partha added a series of command packs for the Greek, Macedonian, Republican Roman, and Gallic figure lines. The first three consist of four foot figures each, while the Gallic pack has one mounted and two foot figures. The Greek and Macedonian packs each consist of an officer, a standard carrier, a trumpeter, and a flute player.

The Roman pack contains a Centurian, signifer, vexillum carrier, and a cornu player. The Centurian has a nice transverse crest, while the cornuist wears a finely rendered wolfskin pelt. As is to be expected with Rai Partha figures, the detailing is incredible. Along with the exceptional detailing, a good bit of character is evident, as in the firm-set jaw of the Centurian.

Two of my personal favorite figures are the Macedonian officer, and the Gallic carnyx blower. The detailing of the Macedonian officer's muscled cuirass is phenomenal, while the limewashed hair of the carnyx blower has been brought out beautifully. Other than the carnyx player, the Gallic pack has one foot and one mounted chieftain. My only complaint lies with these two figures, as they are too thin and small for "fearsome" Gauls. If you show up with these two, instead of fighting them, your opponent may want to give them a C.A.R.E. package. Other than the size discrepancy of the Gauls, I would have to say that these are some of the finest figures around for any period. They will make nice additions to any Classical army.
