For those not familiar with Mirliton, this
is an Italian company that produces an extensive range of Napoleonic, 1850-1870
European, Renaissance, Medieval and Ancient figures in 25mm. They are available
from G.KG. Company, 86 Regan Road, Ridgefield, CT 06877. Prices are $1.35 for
infantry or cavalry figures and $1.85 for horses. Discounts are available for full
boxes. The ancient range comprises Greeks (3), Etruscans (19) although 8 of the
earliest figures are listed as out of production), Samnites (6), and Republican
Romans (9). The samples are 28mm sole to eyeball . Note that the earlier Etruscans
and some of the Romans are a little smaller. They are of normal proportions, dean
cast, and well detailed. Shields, spears, and some swords are separately cast. These
are also available separately for conversion, etc. The Samnite sample (SAI) is an
advancing unarmored infantryman, with helmet and greaves. The attic helmet has
five upright feathers. The figure is poised to strike with a spear or sword. He was
equipped with an early round wicker shield but could likewise be armed with a
scutum for later times. The Etruscan figure (E-19) is actually a Campanian
cavalryman with crested helmet and disk back and breast plates. He rides an
unarmored, unsaddled horse and is equipped with a round shield and spear. The
Roman sample is a (117) heavy cavalryman with crested helmet, cloak, spear and
small round shield. These are historically accurate and well done figures. The
Samnites and Etruscans in particular fill a void in other ranges.
