Blood Axe Ancients

(Ancients Rules)

by Tom McMillen

This is a set of ancient rules produced by Lanee Runolfsson and David Kaser, available from Adventure Books and Games, 249 East Pine Street, Central Point, Oregon 97502. The cost is $10 for a card covered 35 page booklet plus one sheet of Addenda. The rules are intended for 25mm figures using basing compatible with DBA, WRG 7th & Tactica. Actually my impression is that these rules blend elements of all three sets of these rules with some original concepts. The simplicity of Tactica style combat mechanics and initiative alternate move system is combined with some of the element concepts of WRG plus the smaller size armies of DBA. Actually 12 pages are devoted to army lists consisting of 8 to 15 units comprised of WRG 7th type elements. The list spans from chariot times to late Roman armies. These lists allows some flexibility in army composition.

Maneuver and formation choice is limited. Wheeling, for example, is not allowed by Close and Lowe Order Infantry, or Close Order Cavalry unless in contact with a command element. (Ed Note. one up on Tactica). The WRG concepts of pinning units, evading and push backs are included. Dice are thrown for individual figures in missile and melee combat similar to Tactica, although certain modifiers are provided for melee combat dice. Successive push backs and the concept of an increasing panic level contribute to unit destruction. Pursuit then occurs. Skirmish infantry are particularly, and realistically, ineffective. Elephants, chariots and camels are provided for, although elephants are pretty much a one shot weapon. Generals, in addition to affecting maneuver, also add to a units combat advantage. A simple Army Morale System based on destroyed units determines the games outcome.

This is a fairly well-written set of rules with plenty of diagrams and examples. I enjoyed its sarcastic yet tongue-in-cheek humor overtones. For those not satisfied with other commercial sets or looking for some alternative ideas, this will be an interesting set of rules.
