GHQ Harpoon Miniatures

CV8 USS Hornet

Reviewed by Jerry Lane

GHQ has released the Hornet as one of their Micronauts line of 1/2400 scale World War II warships. The casting is good with all the detail that GHQ is known for. There was a small amount of flash along the edge of the flight deck and on the hull that was easily removed. The ship comes in three pieces; hull, flight deck, and island that fit together tightly. Nineteen airplanes (six ready to takeoff, 13 with wings folded) are included and can be spotted on the deck as desired to make the model look like a real flattop. Dimensions of the model are 4" x 1/2", just right for this scale. A beautiful model for any gamer interested in WWII Pacific Naval gaming. List price is $9.95.

The California model also covers her sister ship the South Carolina as built. Both ships have recently had a refit that added box launchers for Tomahawk missiles. Sticklers for detail will have to add these if they want the current ships.. The masts and antennae on the superstructure were a little bent from the package and require some care while straightening. There was a very small amount of flash. The ship comes in three pieces (hull, forward superstructure, and aft superstructure) that fitted together tightly once one of the guide holes was cleaned out. Three helicopters are also included. Dimensions of the model (3" x 3"), are just right for this scale. A very good casting and worth adding to your modern naval collection. The stock number is HUS 12, list price is $8.00, and the ship should be available from most dealers. If you have trouble finding it write to GHQ, 2634 Bryant Ave. South, Minneapolis, MN 55408.
