So she played at magic, and amused her family. Then someone told her that a mage would have to know how to read and write. Girls were not schooled in her social class, which discouraged her only as long as she could find no one who would teach her. Then she met a relative who knew how to read and begged him to teach her. Thinking the child would soon tire of study, he obliged her, and to his surprise, she learned quickly. "This child is bright," he told her parents, "She should study." But her parents needed her hands for more mundane work. She grew to resent her lost opportunity, and determined within herself to learn more. Each time the relative came, she would ask him to teach her more; in his absence she would practice her writing. She made it plain to her parents that she was unhappy with her present life, and some day she would find someone to teach her magic, and then she would leave. "But we need you; there is much work to do at home," her mother told her. This didn't deter her, for the child was headstrong. One time the eldest son became ill, and the family took him to a temple in the city, using their meager savings and money from what they could sell of their produce to pay for his healing. There, Calena learned that a small school of magic was in the town. "If you want to study magic so badly, child, why not study at the temple?" her father asked her. But that was not the kind of life she wished to follow. After that visit to town, Calena was more restless than ever. When she was old enough, she vowed she would leave on her own to study. She began collecting and saved every coin she could earn, or even steal. She even sold two possessions that belonged to her parents. Finally, she found an opportunity to go to the city and she left. She went to school, but because she hadn't enough money to pay, they would not take her. Then she met someone who promised to teach her without obligation, and she studied with him. She soon found that there was indeed and obligation, and she left him; he sought her out, threatening to punished her if she didn't return to him. Then she met Alavar, who took her into the group of misfits he was gathering. By now, Calena could read well, and continued to practice what she had learned. On the forays the group made, she found a few scrolls which helped her continue learning. Then Alavar chose her to join him with four others on an adventure to find a lost treasure.
