STR 14 Patron Deities: Hanali Celanil
BACKGROUND A sensitive youngster, Justen was teased by his human friends for his elven features. He took it to heart so much that he began to believe it when some persisted in telling him that there was a demon somewhere in his family. This festered inside him until one day he asked his mother about it. "No child, indeed not. Your father was an elf, and all elves have pointed ears," she laughed. But the boy was still troubled. The remark got him to thinking about the supernatural, and he became interested in religion. Whenever he met someone who knew something about religion, he would listen and ask questions. "If you want to learn about religion, I will take you to a temple," his mother had said at last. This thrilled Justen; he could hardly wait! Finally the day came when they visited the city, and his mother kept her promise. Justen was enthralled by the temple, the vestments, and everything about it. The priest was impressed by the young lad, especially by his quick mind and ability to connect ideas. "I would be pleased to accept this lad for training," he told justen's mother. "I hoped you might, You see, I and my children are poor, for I am a widow. If Justen could find a place here, it would be so much better for him, and for us." So Justen began his career, studying the faith and learning how to allow magic to be channeled through him. He was an apt pupil, for his wisdom was above average. As it happened, though, he did not continue with the temple when he had learned enough to practice clerical arts. He met some young folks who told him that they needed him, and he would come to help when they asked. Though they were of doubtful reputation, he sympathized with their needs. They finally persuaded him to join them in an adventure they were planning, for they would need a cleric in their party, and could find no other to accompany them. And so Justen Desta, following his heart rather than his head, agreed to join them.
