Panzer Colors

Book Review

by Don Lowry

PANZER COLORS by Bruce Cutver & Bill Murphy, illustrated by Don Greer

This 8 1/2"x11", 96 page, plus paper covers, thoroughly illustrated volume is published by Squadron/Signal Publications, publishers of the "Armor In Action" series, previously reviewed here. There are 16 pages of color illustrations of German WWII anti-tank guns, AFVs and other vehicles, and almost all the other pages have one or more black & white wartime photographs. There is, nevertheless, considerably more text in this work than in any of the "Armor In Action" volume.

The subject of this book is indicated by the subtitle, "Camouflage of the German Panzer Forces 1935-45", and it's very well covered. The arrangement is roughly chronological and covers both official colors and color schemes as well as numerous deviations from the standards. "Ger man camouflage in WWII was, " as the introduction states, "the most highly developed, the most interesting, and the most diverse ot all the belligerent powers ... culminating in the 1943-45 three-color type, the most sophisticated system yet devised, It has continued to influence military coloring practices up to today."

If you are into AFV modeling, either for miniatures wargaming or just for collecting, you'll find this work to be of great value in finding realistic color schemes for your models. If you're not a modeler but interested in WWII AFVs you'll still find a great deal of interest here. The photos are all clear and well reproduced and very informative, not only about camouflage but about the vehicles and the German army. The color illustrations are outstanding. You couldn't ask for, or find, better. All in all this is a very valuable addition to any AFV or WWII buff's library. It sells for $6.95 and is available from Squadron Shops and other good hobby shops across the country, or by mail from The Squadron Shop, Dept. C, 3461 East Ten Mile Rd, Warren HI 48091 (add $1.00 for postage and handling).
