Arms and Uniforms:
The Second World War
Part I

Book Review

by Don Lowry

by Liliane and Fred Funken.

The authors of this work are well known for their similar works on the Napoleonic Wars and WWI. This English-language version is published in England (but printed in Belgium) by Ward Lock Ltd. This is an 8"x10" hard back, 120-page book, and just about half the pages are color illustrations of uniforms and weapons. Covered in this first volume are the French army from 1935 to 1940, the German Army and Nazi party before, and in the early years of the War, the Russian Army from 1918 to 1941, Czechoslovakia, Polan and Belgium.

There are to be three more volumes to cover the rest of WWII. The color illustrations of uniforms are quit informative, those of armored fighting vehicles less so, and the text, unfortunately, wanders off into a simplified history of the War instead of sticking to the title subject. Nevertheless, a lot of information is available here that is not easily found elsewhere.

It sells for $12.40 and is available at Sky Books International, Inc., 48 East 50th Street New York, NY 10022. Dealers can obtain it from Bill Dean Books, Ltd., 166-41 Powells Cove Blvd., Whitestone, NY 11357
