Background The 1973 "October War" began suddenly with the Egyptian Air Force making dozens of preemptive strikes against IAF airfields and other targets. The attacks had nowhere near the success that Israel enjoyed in the 1967 war. The inferior training and lack of experience of the Egyptian pilots, combined with an aggressive Israeli defense, made some of the strikes very costly. Over one IAF airfield, two hastily scrambled Phantoms shot down seven MiG-17s and MiG-21s out of one EAF strike group alone. The attack was shattered and only minimal damage resulted against the Israelis. Ground Units Aircraft shelters x 2: K-1318, 1315. Tower x 1, large building x 1: both K-1016. Hangar x 1: K- 10 15. POL x 2 (bunkered), trucks x 2: all in K-0816. EWR type B, TCM20 20mm lt. AAA x 1: both entrenched in K-0519. Parked aircraft: F-4E x 2, one per A/C shelter. AAA defenses M-55 quad. 12.7mm It. AAA x 2, TCM/M3 20mm Mobile AAA x 1, Chaparral MIM- 72A SAM fire unit x 1, entrenchments x 2: free set-up in any hexes within 2 of a listed ground unit. EAF strike aircraft Eight MiG-17F (ground attack variant) plus four MiG-21PFMA. Four MiG-17 set-up in any hex of megahex L-1015, four more in megahex L-1010, and the four MiG-21 in megahex L-1005. All facing east, all speed 4.0, MiG-17s in the LO band and MiG-21s in the ML band. All aircraft within a megahex must be at same altitude level. IAF defense aircraft Two F-413 Phantoms (export models with slats and RWR plus DDS type A loaded with 8 flare/7 Chaff). One in K-1112, facing west, altitude = 2, speed = 2.0. Second in K-1113, facing west, altitude = 1, speed = 2.0. Length: 30 game turns Notes
1. All aircraft camouflaged, all begin unspotted but may begin detection by EWR if not masked by terrain. 2. MiG-17 load- Stations 1,4=400L FTeach; 2,3=one med RP with med. rockets each, 5, 6 = one 225 lb. HE bomb each. Conf.=DT, Load = 12. 3. MiG-21 load. Stations 1,5 = 250L VT each; 2, 4 = one DR with two 550 4b. HE bombs each; 3 = one G SH 23mm gun pack. Conf. = DT, Load =15. 4. F-4E load. Stations 2,4 = two Shaffir IRM each; 6, 7, 8, 9 = one AIM-7E each. Conf. = CL, Load = 8. 5. Victory. Ground units and runway hexes (but not AAA defenses) are worth double victory points to EAF player. Parked aircraft counters represent three F-4 aircraft each and suffer whatever hits the shelters take. Each "Y' hit puts one out of action. Each aircraft put out of action is worth 10 points. 6. The MiG player may, prior to play, opt to arm some, none, or all the MG-21 s as follows. Stations 1, 2, 4, 5 = AA- 2A Atoll; 3 = 600L FT. The option is written down, but not revealed to IAF player until missiles are used. Each MiG so configured gives the IAF player 4 VPs. 7. Optional rules. Fuel: MiG-17 start = 120, bingo = 80. MiG-21 start = 180, bingo = 120. F-4 start = 550, bingo 40 unless all three runways are damaged, then bingo 120. 8. Optional pilot quality. MG pilots are generated from tables and assigned to aircraft as desired. F-4E crews (pilot/radar off.): #1 = V, R, #2 = R, R. Both pilots have excellent Confidence. Pilot and crewman of #1 are Tactics Masters. Eagles Of The Gulf Part II (Subpart A)
