The Empress' Dragoons were formed in 1806 with two regular squadrons of two companies each and one velite squadron. The regiment had a staff of fifty-one. Each company was composed of one Capitaine, two Lieutenants en premier, two Lieutenants en second, one Marechal des logis chef, six Marechaux des logis, one Fourrier, ten brigadiers, ninety-six Dragons, three trompettes and two Marechaux-ferrants. The velites were composed of two companies, each of 125 men.

In 1807 two further squadrons were added. The velite squadron was disbanded in 1812 but the regiment was later increased to six squadrons. Disbanded on 3 April 1814, the Dragoons were reformed in 1815 with 935 men in four squadrons.
