Originally formed as a regiment of light horse in December 1799, it became the Grenadiers a Cheval de la Garde des Consuls in 1800. The regiment was renamed the Grenadiers a Cheval de la Garde Imperiale in May 1804. It was composed of four squadrons, each of two companies.

The etat-major (regimental staff) contained a Colonel, one Major, four Chefs d'escadrons, one Quartier-maitre tresorier, one Capitaine instructeur, one Adjudant-major, two Sous-adjudants majors, four Porte-etendard, one Aide-artiste veterinaire, one Trompette-major, two Brigadiers trompettes, one Timbalier, one Maitre tailleur, one Maitre cullottier, one Maitre bottier, three Officiers de sante, one Sous-instructeur, one Vaguemestre, one Artiste veterinaire, one Maitre armurier, one Maitre sellier, one Maitre eperonnier, and one Marechal-ferrant.

Each company consisted of, one Capitain, two Lieutenants en premier, two Lieutenants en second, one Marechal des logis chef, six Marechaux des logis, one Fourrier, ten Brigadiers, ninety-six Grenadiers, three Trompettes, and one Marechal-ferrant.

On 15 April 1806, a new organisation was announced. The staff was increased to forty-seven and included two Majors and five Chefs d'escadrons. The regiment contained four squadrons as before plus a squadron of velites. Company strength was the same as before except for the addition of a second Marechal-ferrant. The velite squadron was also of two companies with a total of 250 men. Each company had one Capitaine, one Lieutenant en premier, one Lieutenant en second, one Marechal des logis chef, four Marechaux des logis, one Fourrier, eight Brigadiers, 100 Velites, and two Trompettes.

In 1811 the velite squadron was disbanded and the regiment was reorganised into five regular squadrons. Following the invasion of Russia in 1812 the regiment was reduced to four squadrons, but in 1813 a fifth and then sixth velite squadron was raised. Disbanded on 23 July 1814, the Grenadiers were reformed in 1815 into four squadrons with a total strength of 1,040 officers and men.
