I have confined myself on this subject to the period 1745-1748, since this is, for wargaming purposes, the most interesting part of the W.A.S. as far as Dutch troops are concerned. It also makes the subject less complex. Since much specific and detailed information is lacking or missing, it's not easy to give a usefull general view. Main reason for this is that there wasn't yet any formal uniform-regulation for the States Army until the great army-reorganisation in 1749/1751. Much of the regimental appearance was at the discretion of its owner. This doesn't mean however that there wasn't any uniformity in the army's general appearance. Truth is that this is one of the reasons that much specific regimental information has been lost. This, combined with an almost total lack of contemporary drawings or paintings, doesn't make an easy job. Main problem is the term 'facings'. Several regimental coats didn't have collar and/or lapels. In case they had, these mostly were the same colour as the cuffs. Where I mention `facings' I mean 'cuffs'; eventually collar and/or lapels having the same colour, unless stated otherwise. The information on the colour of the coats, facings and waistcoats/breeches is rather accurate, being available from contemporary sources. Waistcoat and breeches usually had the same colour. As for the collar, lapels and the buttons I have given only the information I'm rather sure of. This comes from paintings and drawings (mostly officer portraits) and an illustration of regimental coats of the surviving regiments in 1753 after the great army-reorganisation. In this case I've assumed that the general features of the coats haven't changed between the W.A.S. and 1753, unless I'm sure of the opposite. In cases where more detailed information is available, I have mentioned it separately per regiment. Where information on lapels/collars or other details is missing, the choice is all yours.
