1757: The Advance to Nismes

July 12, 1757

Translated and Edited With Additional Materials By Neil Cogswell

The roads from Swigan had been so bad that several of the regiments did not reach their new camp until 2 o'clock this morning. Today, we rested in the new Camp at Münchengrätz. We received news from Colonel Jahnus that he has had left Königgrätz with 2,500 Croats. From there, he has entered Silesia via Landshut, from whence he chased 4 Prussian battalions who retired to Schweidnitz. He has demanded recruits and contributions from all the Bailiffs; to supplement this, he has distributed an order throughout the countryside making it an offence to deliver anything more to the King of Prussia.

Towards evening, the Duke of Arenberg, with the Advanced Guard that he commands, went to take station on the right of the camp that the army will occupy tomorrow. The camp-markers of the army marched with him.
