Journal of Horace St. Paul
1757: The Advance to Nismes

June 29, 1757

Translated and Edited With Additional Materials By Neil Cogswell

The Army of Marshal Daun left today to encamp near the Elbe: its right rests at Mochow and its left at Wostrow; Headquarters are at Czelakowitz. Tomorrow morning, at the first glimmer of day, the Army of His Royal Highness will march to join that of Marshal Daun making a single encampment. In the meantime, four bridges have been thrown over the Elbe; we shall probably immediately cross these.

The Corps of General Nádasdy has advanced to Benatek. It is acting as a kind of Advanced Guard for the Main Army. 3,000 Croats, under the command of General Beck, have made their way to Jung-Bunzlau, from whence the Prussians have retired and are continuing their march towards Saxony and Lusatia.

As well as the regimental cannon and the guns attached to the grenadiers, there are 126 cannon in the Reserve Artillery Park; of these, 24 are 12-pounders the remainder being 6- or 3-pounders.
