1757: The Advance to Nismes

July 2, 1757

Translated and Edited With Additional Materials By Neil Cogswell

Today, there arrived a battalion of Archduke Carl and 600 hussars coming from Hungary. Four other battalions are also on their way from Hungary and have already entered Moravia. General Nádasdy came to report personally to His Royal Highness on the position of his own troops and the strength of the Prussians. Of the latter, the army is still in the neighborhood of Jung-Bunzlau; its strength does not exceed 25,000 men. General Nádasdy has pushed forward some hussars into the rear of the Prussian positions. These have gone as far as Gabel and Reichenberg; there, they have released some Austrians who had been wounded and made prisoner on 20th April when the Prussians invaded Bohemia. As a result of this meeting, the Right Wing of the Reserve Corps, under the orders of Graf Anton von Colloredo, was ordered to march tomorrow to Alt-Benatek; all the camp-markers of the army are to accompany this force.

In order to conserve his health, which is greatly afflicted, General Königsegg left the army today to go take up his Command of the Knights of the Teutonic Order; he will assist in the nomination of the Grand Bailiff.

Today there arrived at Headquarters 13 prisoners and 37 Prussian deserters.
