Netherlands Artillery
in the Waterloo Campaign

Foot Artillery Battery ‘Steenberghe’

by Geert van Uythoven, The Netherlands

This ‘southern’ battery was served by a company of the 4th line artillery battalion. The battery was commanded by Captain Maximilian-Henry Steenberghe. Other officers: 1st Lieutenant Leopold Winssinger (ex-2nd lieutenant in the Foot artillery company ‘Stevenart’, promoted) 1st Lieutenant George Frederik Ruysch van Coevorden (ex-2nd lieutenant in the Foot artillery company ‘Stevenart’); 2nd Lieutenant C.F. de Fiquelmont. Train detachment: 1st Lieutenant F. van Galen (ex-2nd lieutenant of the train detachment with the Foot artillery company ‘Stevenart’, promoted); 1st Lieutenant Johannes Martinus Daniel Seitz; 2nd Lieutenant Camusé; 2nd Lieutenant Demmeni. Leaving Mechelen on 24 June with a transport of 30 vehicles destined for the main artillery park, but without any guns, Captain Steenberghe arrived at Bavay on 28 June.

During the siege of Valenciennes which fell on 20 July, this company served two batteries, one consisting of mortars, the other one of heavy artillery. The battery ‘Stevenart’ had lost during the battle of Quatre-Bras, apart from its commander, so many men, horses, and material, that it was not able to take the field anymore except for the section of Lieutenant Leopold Winssinger. On 30 June, the section ‘Winssinger’ was absorbed into the Foot artillery company ‘Steenberghe’, which formed a new battery from that date on. This battery was assigned to the 1st Brigade (Major-General Ferdinand d’Hauw) of the 1ste Nederlandsche Divisie (Lieutenant-General Jan Andries Stedman). After the Waterloo campaign the battery marched back to the Netherlands, being garrisoned in Gent.
