Portsmouth
During the
Great French Wars

1793-1815

This is a one day course being run by Dr Philip MacDougall at Portsmouth College, Tangier Road, Portsmouth, PO3 6PZ, on Saturday 14 March 1998, from 10.00am - 4.00pm.

Course details: Between 1793 and 1815 Britain was involved in a long drawn out struggle for survival. For much of this period the country was under threat of invasion. Portsmouth, with its military barracks, Royal Dockyard and other naval facilities, was a major contributor to the defence of the nation. This one-day course will examine the City's contribution to the war effort. As well as the various military and naval facilities in the area, attention will also be given to the civilian population and how their lives were changed.

The day will be divided into four sessions:

  1. Portsea Island and the French Wars.
  2. The Royal Navy and the City of Portsmouth.
  3. The naval dockyard and its contribution to the war effort.
  4. The Army and the military defence of Portsmouth.

Telephone Dr MacDougall on 01705 667521 ext.352 for more details.
