Greenhill Book News

Greenhill have an exciting programme of publishing lined up for us enthusiasts. In February 1998 they will publish 1815: The Waterloo Campaign - Wellington, His German Allies and the Battles of Ligny and Quatre Bras, by Peter Hofschroer. April sees the issue of The Greenhill Napoleonic Wars Data Book: Personnel and Losses, Horses, Cannon, Colours and Standards, Artillery, 1792-1815 by Digby Smith. I have seen some sample chapters of this work and it will certainly be a mine of information for the student of the period, especially for those who require orders-of-battle for their own literary efforts or for Wargames purposes. In the Spring they will publish The Jena Campaign 1806 by F.N.Maude and the first of two 'additional' volumes to A History of the Peninsular War by Sir Charles Oman. These will both complement the great work and the first is to be Volume VIII namely, The Biographical Dictionary of British Officers Killed and Wounded 1808-1814 by John A.Hall. Volume IX will be published in 1999, and Paddy Griffith is editing a compilation of valuable articles to bring Sir Charles' magnum opus up to date in accordance with studies of the subject area since the original was published.

Naval Book News

The Nelson Portraits by Richard Walker will be a major new work on the many pictures of Nelson that have been produced over the years. This book will comprise an introductory essay by Richard Walker and a detailed catalogue covering the known contemporary portraits. These consist of oils, miniatures, drawings, engravings and sculpture, all of which are illustrated in the book. Not only does the text put these portraits into biographical context, but it also reflects Nelson's fragile state of health and his many traumatic experiences in war and love; linked areas in his life that have so far remained unexplored. The result is a pictorial study of one of the greatest heroes of the Napoleonic Wars. This book will be published in March 1998 at an expected price of £60.00. For further details contact the Royal Naval Museum Trading Company on 01705 826682.

By the time you read this magazine Chatham Publishing will have produced The Campaign of Trafalgar 1803-1805, edited by Robert Gardiner price £30; The 50-Gun Ship by Rif Winfield; and Shipwrecks of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Eras by Terence Grocott. Chatham Publishing are producing a wide range of naval history books of a very high standard, not only in the information included between the covers but in the quality of the finished product. Their books contain many pictures not previously seen in print before.
