Uniforms Of The Greeks And Their Enemies
During the Era of the Great War

Introduction

The facts and opinions presented are based on several sources including the artwork and photos located in ‘THE EVONES’ book. These uniform notes are in addition to the uniform article that appeared in the special Balkan’s War issue of the ‘Time Portal Passages’ magazine.

This is the basic uniform listed for the era and applies to World War One, Southern Russia and the Asia Minor Campaign. The basic color of the Greek uniform was khaki but it was a mid-brown color rather than the African faded color. It was the same color for the trousers and tunic. The infantry wore red collar patches with black unit numbers. The equipment was brown leather. In 1914-16 the infantry a reported as wearing a WHITE! British style soft cap which was the same as they wore during the Balkan Wars. Later the infantry wore a mix of French and British steel helmet during World War One but adopted the French Adrian helmet during the campaigns in Russia and Asia Minor.

The Evones like the infantry wore basically the same uniform during the three major conflicts of this article. The photos from the various Greek sources indicate that some variation in the standard uniform was worn.
