Chronology of
Military Conflicts in Burma

250BC to 980AD

by Rudy Scott Nelson

The translation of Burmese calendar dates is very difficult. Some accounts vary by years. Identifying of exact months or days is virtually impossible. Therefore, I am listing the most agreed upon year only. Also the size of forces were exaggerated. I have adopted the rule of thumb used by other earlier writers by considering their reduced estimates as a more probable number. This list includes most of the significant conflicts involving Burmese armies whether fighting each other or an outside opponent. I have also included selected invasions by Siam’s eastern neighbors into that country which would impact on the Burmese-Siamese relationship. The wars with the Siamese are recorded under a separate chronology.

250 BC………….Arakan is defeated by invaders (?Indian or Mon tribes)
122BC- 9 AD…………..Several HAN China expeditions attack towns in Upper Burma
~80AD……….Upper Burma Confederation defeat Indian states of Assam, Manipur, Tippera and Kachar ?.
~100 AD………..PYU vs Kanraw. Ethnic warfare between various towns
500 AD…………Confederation of five towns vs Ayetthima near Thaton. No victor mentioned.
~600…………….Talaing Mons ally with Tibet vs Chinese/Nan Chao
700-1253……….Nan Chao vs Chinese Dynasties. Burmese allies supported Nan Chao during these wars.
700-750………..Nan Chao conducts a campaign against several towns along the Irrawandy river of Upper Burma. Chinese siege equipment force the towns to quickly surrender
700-800………..Buddhist (Talaing) vs Hindu (Pyu?) settlers in Prome. Hindu driven out
800…………….Pyu tribes of P’iao vs Nan Chao
800…………….Talaing Buddhist vs Hindu settlers in the area of Pegu
809…………….Nan Chao completes the conquest of Pyu tribes except those in Prome
809-865……….Nan Chao forces are allied with the Pyu vs other tribes in Burma
863……………Nan Chao + Pyu + Kachin allies vs Viets of Hanoi
~900…………..Ceylon + Arakan allies vs Bengal India. Several raids during this century. Mainly sea raids but a few major land-sea expeditions did occur.
