Overview of Uniforms Worn
During the Balkan Wars

Introduction

by Rudy Scott Nelson

It would be impossible to describe in-depth the styles and variations of uniforms worn by the various nations during the Balkan Wars. The steel helmet which became so popular during World War One had not yet been adopted as standard equipment. As a result most nations wore unique soft hats which often had national characteristics. Also the early 1900s seems to have been a transition period as all countries were in the process of converting to new uniform styles as the war began.

Therefore the purpose of this article is to provide some basic data for painting or converting castings for use. In the bibliography, I listed a large well written Uniform plate book but unfortunately for English speaking researchers, it is written in Greek. I am thankful that my friends in Greece provided me with translations. The Greek 'Alpha' miniatures company is in the process of designing 15mm or 20mm castings which can be used for the war.

Note:

Harness refers to the ammunition belts and other leather straps.
Epaulets refer to shoulder straps and shoulder boards.
