Danish-Schleswig-Holstein War
Uniform Notes

Federal German and Prussia

by Rudy Scott Nelson

FEDERAL GERMAN

The uniforms of the various states which comprised the "Federal German" Confederation at this time still retained many national characteristics. This was particularly true regarding headgear. As with the Danes many troops in the field wore the field cap. In the German case, the field cap was the characteristic brimless tunic-colored cap which remained in use in the German Armies until the end of World War One.

PRUSSIA

Headgear. The Prussian Army had just introduced the spiked helmet in 1842. This version was closer in appearance with the high crown to the Russian version worn during the Crimean War than the later more famous lower crown pickehaub. It was black leather with brass eagle plate, spike and chain. At this time the Chasseurs wore the Infantry spiked helmet.

Tunic was Dark Blue with red collar and cuff distinctions

Trousers were Dark gray with a red side stripe.

Crossbelts were White

Knapsack looks to be of Black leather but could have a gray waterproof cover.

A picture of a drum shows it to be white with red tooth edgings along the top and bottom.

11th HUSSARS

Dark Green was the dominant color and included the trousers, Dolman, saberaques, collar and horse blanket. The Pelisse was also dark green with black fur edging. Edging and stripes on the dolman, trousers, and pelisse were either white. Belts were white. Headgear was the tall black Busby. Horse equipment was black.
