Uniforms of the Danish-German War of 1864: Prussian

The uniform was the same as those worn during the Austro-Prussian War and underwent only minor changes prior to the Franco-Prussian War.

INFANTRY

Tunic: Dark Blue

Overcoat: Dark Gray

Leather Equipment: Black for Fusiler Rgts and other line Rgts 3rd battalion. 1st and 2nd battalions of Rgts had white straps.

Cartridge boxes: black

Trousers: Dark Grey with red stripe.

Red Collar and Cuff patches on the tunic and overcoat. Regimental numbers on the Shoulder straps whose colors varied by regiment.

Headgear: Lower crowned black Picklehaub M1860 version with brass metal work. Also artwork shows men wearing a grey brimless field cap with red band and black-white cockade.

Backpack: Hide

Haversack and Straps: White

Boots: Mainly Black but some Tan.

JAGERS

Tunic: Dark Green

Trousers & Overcoat: Gray

Leather Equipment: Black

Red Collar and Cuff patches on the tunic and overcoat.

Shoulder straps colors varied by battalion. Battalions were identified by a number on the shoulder straps.

Headgear: Lower peaked shako with black plume and gold metal work. Also artwork shows men wearing a grey brimless field cap with red band and black-white cockade.

Backpack: Hide

Haversack and straps: White

Boots : Mainly Black but some Tan

ARTILLERYMEN

Tunic: Dark Blue

Overcoat: Dark Gray

Trousers: Dark Grey with red stripe.

Black Collar and Cuff patches on the tunic and overcoat.

Shoulder straps: red. Regiments number on the shoulder straps.

Leather: White straps

Cartridge boxes: black

CAVALRY

CUIRASSIERS

Tunic: Off-White

Collar patches: Cuffs in Facing colors:

    GdC: Red
    Gde Rgt: Cornflower Blue
    1st: black
    2nd: Crimson
    3rd: Lgt Blue
    4th: Orange
    5th: Light Red
    6th: Dark Blue
    7th: Yellow
    8th-Green

Trousers: Off-white (yellowish tint).

Black Knee-high boots.

Helmet: Picklehaub with yellow metal for the Guard Rgt, Guard du Corps and 6th Rgt. Other regiments wore a white metal helmet. The Guard Rgt wore a yellow metal cuirass. Other regiments : White metal cuirass. Cuirass was worn only as part of the full dress uniform not as part of field dress.

DRAGOONS

Tunic: Mid-Blue some sources say Sky-blue.

Collar patches and Cuffs in Facing colors

    1st & 2nd Guard Rgt: red
    1st: red
    2nd: black
    3rd: Light Red
    4th: Yellow

Trousers: Grey overalls with side stripes of red (1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 10th.

Black Knee-high boots

Helmet : Black picklehaub with yellow metal plates. Some wore a tunic colored brimless field cap with facing color band.

HUSSARS

Tunic: White.

Facing colors were:

    GdC: Red
    Gde Regt: Cornflower Blue
    1st: black
    2nd: Crimson
    3rd: Light Blue
    4th: Orange
    5th: Light Red
    6th: Dark Blue
    7th: Yellow
    8th: Green

Trousers: Grey overalls

Black: boots

Headgear: Black fur caps with colored bags.
1st & 2nd Liebhussaren: red bags

UHLANS

Tunic: Dark Blue

Facing colors on the Collar and Cuffs.

    1st & 2nd Gde: Red
    1st & 5th: white
    2nd & 6th: Red
    3rd & 7th: Yellow
    4th & 8th: Light Blue

Trousers: Grey overalls

Black Knee-high boots

Headgear: Square-topped shako, Black lower portion with the upper portion in facing color with white metal plate for the 1st Guard Rgt and a yellow plate for the 2nd Guard Rgt.

Pennants were white over Black for all regiments.

Full dress shako plume was white.
