This article is written with wargamers and miniature painters in mind. Therefore the format may be different and less detailed than the average reader may expect. Information is also designed more for the 15mm painter rather than the larger toy soldier scales. Also while I might offer some miniature castings options, which may not be the only castings available in that range. Color variations are another concern. What is light blue for one author may be mid or sky blue to another writer. I have compared text statements with artwork colors whenever possible. The three main combatants were the Danes, Austrians and the Prussians. Only a few basic comments will be made on the Austrians and Prussians. There are already several books on their uniforms which were much the same as those worn during the Austro-Prussian and The Italian Independence Wars. The Osprey series in particular contains several books on them. Danish ArmyThe Danish Army wore much the same uniform as they adopted during the Three Years War 1848-50. As with most armies where half or more of the force is made up of reservists, there was variety among the actual items worn. . INFANTRY Tunics: Dark Bkue. Red Collar patches and red piping on the cuffs. Numbers on shoulder straps were used to designate the regiment. Trousers: Sky Blue Leather Equipment: Black In paintings the sky blue looks more like a mid-blue and in pictures of museum staff in uniforms the blue is sea blue (Mid-blue with a tint of green) Kepi: Officially Sky Blue with a red and white cockade. Dark blue kepis were worn by some. Artwork shows most men wearing overcoats of varying shades of Dark Blue and Gray. FOOT GUARDS Tunics: Red Collar, cuffs and shoulderstraps: Light Blue piped white. Trousers: Light Blue with white stripe. Leather Equipment: White Bearskin hat: black with white pewter star plate Field Dress: always show them wearing Bluegreen (green dominant shade) overcoat ARTILLERYMEN Tunics: Dark Bkue. Carmine patches and piping on the cuffs. Numbers on shoulder straps were used to designate the regiment. Trousers: Dark Blue Leather Equipment: Black Kepi: Officially Sky Blue with a red and white cockade. Dark blue kepis were worn. MOUNTED LIV GARDE To my knowledge it did not see combat. Tunic: White Red collar and cuffs Curiass of Yellow metal or gild Leather Equipment: Black Helmet: Yellow Metal with black flowing horse hair plume. LINE DRAGOONS It appears that all other Cavalry regiments were Dragoons. Tunic: Light Blue Trousers : Light Blue Collar patch : Dark Red Helmet: Austrian Napoleonic style with hairless comb.
