Several sources agree on seven major Nations and or cultural/linguistic groups in the Plateau region. Several of these could also be found in adjacent regions. BANNOCK. Located in southern Idaho. Some consider them as part of the Basin region. Fought the USA in 1878 as part of a Paiute alliance. Also, the Bannocks constantly attacked immigrant wagon trains on the Oregon Trail during the 1850s-60s. CAYUSE. Located in Oregon. Fought the Modocs. Won the 1847 War against American settlers. later fought the USA in 1855-59 and again in 1878. COEUR D'ALENE. Salishan tribes located in the upper area of modern Idaho which bear their name. Fought the USA in the Spokane/Coeur d' Alene War. FLATHEADS. Inland SALISH. A major linguistic and cultural group of the Northwest Coast and Plateau region. Located in the areas of British Columbia, Western Washington, Idaho and Western Montana . There were 7 primary groups among the Inland Salish. . Some Salish tribes practiced a head shaping ritual which resulted in they being often referred to as FLATHEADS. A very aggressive Nation. Fought numerous wars with their neighbors including various tribes of the Siksika, Klamath and Kwakiutl tribes. GROS VENTRE. Aka A'ANI. The same name was used for two groups of tribes with the main entry in the Plains region section. The A'ani group was very active militarily and conducted raids on Flatheads from the Plateau region, Spanish in the Southwest and the Cree in Canada. KALISPEL. Salish tribes located in the northern Idaho. KLAMATH. A major Nation whose tribes were located in the area where the Northwest Coast, Plateau and California regions merged. Often a close ally of the Modocs and participated in joint raids with them. However they did not support the Modocs during their conflicts with the USA. Fought wars with the Salmish tribes and the Achomawi . KLATSOP. Flathead tribe. KUTENAI. Located in northern Idaho and southern Canada. LILLOOET. Inland Salmish. Located in western British Columbia and some consider as part of the Northwest Coast region. Fought wars with other Salish NEZ PERCE. A major Salish Nation that did not practice the Flathead ritual. Located in Idaho and Montana. Fought the USA, Chinook. OKANAGAN. ? PALUSE. Located along the eastern Oregon-Washington border. Jopined the Cayuse in the 1847 war against American invaders. SARCI. Aka SARCEE. Fought Tsimshian, Inland Salish and Tinglit tribes. See Plains SHEEPEATERS. Located in central Idaho. A combined tribe of Brannock and Shoshonee migrants. Fought the USA in 1878. SHOSHONI. Aka Shoshonee. Divided into several major groups. The Western Shoshone of Nevada (Basin region), Northern Shoshone of Idaho (Plateau and/or Basin), Snake (Plateau) and Weber Ute of Utah (Basin), Wind River of Wyoming SHUSWAP. Major Salish tribe in British Columbia. Located between the Columbia and Fraiser Rivers. Fought the Tsilkotin. SIKSIKA. Aka Blackfoot. Blackfoot tribes located in the eastern Plateau region. Often fought Salish/Flathead tribes. See Blackfoot in Plains. SNAKE. Aka Shoshoni. Located along the Snake River in Idaho SPOKANE. Located in extreme eastern Washington. Fought the USA in 1858. STONE. Located in south-central British Columbia THOMPSON. Located in south-central British Columbia WALLAWALLA. Salish. Located in NE Oregon, north of the Columbia river. YAKIMA. Located in the Columbia River Basin area of eastern Oregon-Washington. Fought the USA in 1855-59. More America's Far West
