Major Nations of the Great Basin

GASIUTE. Ute. Located to the SW of the Great Salt Lake.

NORTHERN SHOSHONEE. Located in Idaho and part of SW Montana

PAIUTES. Dominated by two the Northern and Southern branches. They arrived in the Great Basin area around 1100 AD. Southern tribes were located mainly in southern Nevada along the Arizona border. The Northern tribes were located in northern Nevada, southern Idaho and eastern Oregon. Many Paiutes had beards and wore capes of braided rabbit skin. Early paiute tribes fought numerous skirmishes with neighboring Navajo and Ute tribes. The tribe under Chief Truckee maintained a friendly relationship with the Americans. A number of warriors formed Company H under Chief Truckee which served with Fremont's California Expedition.

SNAKE. A term applied to several tribes in the Snake River valley, including Paiutes and Shoshonee. Various tribes conducted constant raids on mining camps, isloated houses and stagecoach operations during the 1860-65 era. Allied together during the Snake War of 1866-68 against the USA.

SHOSHONEE. Aka Shoshoni. Divided into several major groups. The Western Shoshonee of Nevada, Northern Shoshonee of Idaho (Plateau and/or Basin), Snake (Plateau) and Weber Ute of Utah, Wind River of Wyoming. The Western Shoshonee's lands divided the Northern and Southern Paiute branches. The Northern Shoshonee in particular often allied with the Americans against traditional enemies such as the Sioux. Weber Utes fought the USA during the Bear River campaign of 1863.

SOUTHERN UTE. Located in southern Colorado

UTES (Language). A major linguistic and cultural group of Nations. Includes the Utes, Southern Utes, Mountain Utes, Gasiute and Paiutes. Some consider it a branch of Shoshonee.

UTES (Nation). A major nation of Utah and western Colorado. Includes Mouache, Capote, Yampa, Mountain and Southern groups. Very active militarily. Fought numerous campaigns in their own region as well as neighboring ones. Camapigned on the Red and Arkansas rivers as well as constant expeditions into New Mexico. At one time or another, fought neighboring Paiutes, Shoshonee, Pueblo, Apache, Comanche, Hopi, Kiowa, Cuampes, Arapahoes, Cheyenne, Navajos, Spanish, Mexicans and Americans. A long lasting alliance was formed between the Mouache Utes and Jicarilla Apache whisch included joint operations from 1750s-1810s.

WALPAPI. Northern Paiutes. Aka Snake.

WEBER UTES. Shoshoni. Located just north of the Great Salt Lake.

WESTERN SHOSHONI. Located mainly in northern Nevada with a tribe (KOSO) in the southern tip of Nevada. Some books consider the Gaisute as Western Shoshonee.

WIMINUCHE. Mountain Utes. Located in SE Utah and SW Colorado.

WIND RIVER SHOSHONI. Located in central and eastern Wyoming.

YAHUSKIN. Northern Paiutes. Aka Snake.
