The DM may lead the PCs off on other adventures in
the area in or around the City of Greyhawk after the move into
Otiluke's old home is completed. Each time the PCs return,
they might meet other acquaintances of Otiluke. The
following are some potential encounters and adventures that
the DM can pursue.
The main thread weaving through this adventure
(believe it or not) revolves around the missing dagger that
Gtorial used. The weapon is cursed and extremely dangerous.
The DM is encouraged to develop his or her own adventure,
considering the following suggestions and possibilities:
The dagger grants its user immunity to divination
spells that would detect the user's location, thoughts,
alignment, etc. It has a +5 bonus to hit and damage, and
causes its user to move at four times normal speed. This
increase in speed applies only to physical attacks and
movement, not to spellcasting or psionic use. The user is
granted AC 0 while holding the weapon; magical devices of
protection cannot lower or alter this score, which overrides all
other considerations.
- The dagger is extremely evil and corrupts its
user. The DM might say that Lord Robilar, then Rary the
Archmage, were both corrupted to evil in turn by possessing
this dagger, which Robilar found in an old temple to Tharizdun
in the Yards (perhaps the same dungeon detailed in WG4 The
Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun). However, the dagger does
not cause its possessor to covet it. Instead, the dagger causes
its possessor to eventually discard it, allowing others to be
corrupted by it like a plague carrier can move through a city
and infect many individuals in turn. This corrupting effect is
only a suggestion, as Lord Robilar and Rary the Archmage
could have turned to evil in other ways, including by their
own choice. The DM should determine game statistics to
reflect this gradual fall into evil and possibly madness. Any
use of the weapon to draw blood makes this descent into
wickedness more rapid.
- Glorial now owns the dagger and will use it in her own
defense. Gloriat's suggested statistics are: AC 8 (ring of
protection +2); MV 12; M6; hp 19; THACO 19; #AT I; Dmg
IM (dagger); Spells 4/2/1. She is 23 years old in 585, and she
has an Intelligence of 15; she is unremarkable otherwise.
Glorial suffers from terrible fears about being attacked by Rary
or others who hated Otituke. She vents considerable anger at
the Circle of Eight (and Count von Suss-Varren) for failing to
protect Otiluke or her from Rary. She knows Otiluke used her
and has long bouts of depression over this. She left Greyhawk
to return to her family in Dyvers, but it is possible the dagger
has already corrupted her (especially since she has used it to
kill someone, which neither Lord Robilar nor Rary ever did, so
her moral decay may have been greatly accelerated) and she
may have slain her family and others she knows, to hide her
identity or her possession of the dagger.
- The dagger might have effects of greater scope. The
DM could determine that it is actually an artifact called the
Harbinger of Tharizdun, designed to spread evil across the
world in preparation for Tharizdun's final release and revenge
on the world. Obviously the weapon would need to be
destroyed or removed from the campaign in some manner as
the DM sees fit to design.
- It is possible that Count Imiric von Suss-Varren, the
gnome noble from the Principality of Ulek, might know more
about the dagger from old legends he heard from relatives or
from Otiluke himself, before the dagger corrupted him as well
and caused him to speak no more about it.
Dedication
The present and past editors of SHADIS would like
to thank everyone at TSR for years of enjoyment. D&D,
AD&D, Greyhawk and so many others are where most of
us chipped our teeth on gaming, and this hobby would
never have been without their love and guidance, as they
raised us out of those "Dark Ages". I'd liked to think that a
lot of imaginations were spared a horrible demise.
The re-birth of Greyhawk feels like an old forge has
been warmed... one last time.
