THE COURIER, Vol. VII, No. 4, contains an article by Bill Greenwald on 'Observation Balloons in Wargames', which say have some application to Colonial gaming. I know the British used balloons in the Baer War, and some of you say want to do something with a balloon unit. The article contains information an making a balloon, observation rules (i.e.: seeing over hills, woods, etc.) and bomb dropping rules (probably not necessary for Colonials). Volume XXV, No. 5 of THE FLAG BULLETIN, his a short piece by Neill Barbour on "The Flags of Algeria.' Flags captured by the French in 1830 described, as Nell as several other 19th Century Algerian flags. New Editor Milton Soong seems to be handling THE HELIOGRAPH quite well. Since the last S&S, three issues of THE HELIOGRAPH have appeared. Issue 41 contains 'TSATF in Sumatra Update', by Hans Yon Stockhausen, 'Rules for Auxiliary Forces for TSATF', by John Manning (an excellent article covering Medical Corps, Signal Corps, and Supply Trains), and 'Chitral, 1895', by Paul Hinson. Issue 42 has 'Fire Combat Systems in TSATF', by Hans Yon Stockhausen, and a battle report by Milton, 'Fire and Store in the Maiden Valley,' a Northwest Frontier battle. Host of Issue 43 is a very extensive set of 'House Rules' for TSATF by Joe Barrette. There are several good ideas in this article. The latest issue of MIDWEST WARGAMER'S ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER has a nice article by Kim Brasington on his new set of rules, 'Palo Alto to Peking - The Author's Perspective.' This is a refreshing examination of the rules by the author, explaining why he did certain things, etc. The June/July issue of MILITARY ILLUSTRATED has an excellent article by Philip Haythornthwaite on "The British Officer in the Boer War, 1899-1902.' Supported by color paintings by Bryan Fosten and some excellent black and white and color photos (the latter both of museum pieces and hand tinted contemporary photos) this article is excellent research material for gamers who are looking for "different' ways to paint the officers for their units of khaki-clad infantry and cavalrymen. MINIATURE WARGAMES Nos. 47 and 48 contains a two-part article by Mike Bell on 'The Colorado Coalfield War, 1913014.1 More interesting information an a little-known "Wild West' era revolt. Ian Weekly of Battlements appears in No. 49 with an article on building a superb 25mm 'Arabian Fort'. Lastly, but never leastly, Issue 48 of SOLDIERS OF THE QUEEN contains a whole bunch of articles on South Africa. There's 'Fish River, 1851', by Gordon Everson, part one of 'The Sailor as Soldier: The Role of Naval Brigades in South Africa 1679-1900', by S. Monick. This first part covers the years 1879-81. J. T. Thompson looks at 'Marines in the Zulu War 1879', and 'The 3/60th Rifles, Transvaal War 1881.' Finally, Robin Drooglever examines Colonel Hannay's charge with the Mounted Infantry at Paardeberg in his "The Time Has Now Come for a Final Effort."
