Prince Eugene of Savoy (Derek McKay for Thames & Hudson) Published in 1979 some copies have materialised at the Dillons on Gower Street. This is old fashioned narrative history without the 19th century Heroes & villains overlay. We journey with the Prince of Savoy-Carignan from disgrace at Court over his Dear Mama's free and easy habits with the poisons to an Austria pinned against the mountains by the armies of the Serene Porte. When the Prince dies he has been the only Austrian general to defeat a French army, the Turks are in full flight (but about to return) and the Spanish kingdom has gone outside the house of Habsburg (which is about to vanish in the male line). The view from Vienna is not one with which one is accustomed to view the War of Spanish Succession but this book takes you there. If Eugene had but found a successor perhaps the Balkans would be speaking German now. More Book Corner:
