The Battles of Chillianwalla and Goojerat by Charlie Gough <>A wee pamphlet with maps (skilfully juxtaposed by Earl Simon) on two of those Sikh battle where we storm in with "Tipperary Tactics" and drive off the Khalsa-ji. Or so we might believe but General Gough clearly shows the importance of British artillery superiority being established, the difficulty at Chillianwalla with its wooded terrain, and the circumstances of a British Cavalry Brigade breaking. . Gareth has reprinted some of the R.U.S.I. correspondence on this topic from senior officers then mere subalterns in Vasey's Jat Lancers. As ever these books are an excellent specific for those who believe old battles quaint and old soldiers stupid.

The Dongola Expedition of 1896 by Captain Hilliard Atteridge

A good introduction to the first stage of the Anglo-Egyptian recapture of the Mahiddiya with the actions in Dongola (the big loop south of Wadi Halfa). Since we were better armed and more numerous the answer is a victory, but what I found interesting (and Atteridge being so close to his subject does not make a feature) is that those numbers were rarely translated into superiority at the coal-face (the teeth-to-tail problem). Two very different systems making war, requiring two different rule systems.

A Visit to Kuldja and the Russo-Chinese frontier in 1880 by Delmar Morgan

What it says, for the really deeply involved colonialist only.
