Aberdeen Proving Grounds

M-60 Main Battle Tank (U.S.A.)

by Robert Runnels

Armament: 105mm rifled gun, coaxial machine gun and machine gun in cupola

Speed: 30mph

First issued to the American Army in 1960. The first M-60 battle tanks replaced M-48 Patton tanks stationed in West Germany. No M-60's were sent to Vietnam. The M-60 still serves in the Israeli army with massive armor (including large amounts of blazer reactive armor), engine and fire control upgrades. M-60's (later versions) even saw service in the American military as late as the 1991 Gulf War. They were used by USMC armored units.
