The 1880 British invasion lead to a popular uprising amongst the peasant class that was decisively defeated in a combined European operation. They Bey, now tamed and shackled by the Debt Commission, was left in charge of the country. The British and French forces withdrew leaving reformist Young Salaam officers in charge. These officers then set out re-conquering the hinterland. A twenty year war followed. Dar as Salaam had many interesting figures that explain the course of history of the last 120 years. Colonel Najr ranked highly as a pro-western reformer and champion of Arab Nationalism. Mullah Amad also stood out as an exemplar of the power of Islam in his teaching of non-violent resistance to Imperialism. But above all was the Messianic figure of Ali Baba, known to history as the "Mad Mahdi." All in all it was a colorful interlude in the Great Rush for Africa.
