Ancient and Medieval Times

STOP PRESS! I have just received Don Featherstone's latest addition to any wargamers library entitled: Warriors and Warfare in Ancient and Medieval Times. Published by Constable Publishers, 3 The Lanchesters, 162 Fulham Palace Rd, London, W6 9ER. Tel: 0181-741-3663. Fax: 0181-74-7562.

The book is 288 pages long with 36 chapters, each chapter is divided into a potted history of the nation/type of warrior and details of their "Style of Fighting".

Needless to say I had a look at the Japanese chapter, of 6 pages, and feel that Don has encapsulated the period very well. There are maps and details of the following battles: Kadesh 1288 BC. Leuctra 371 BC. Jaxartes River 330 BC. Cynoscephalae 197 BC. Ticinus 218 BC. Pharsalus 48 BC. Taginae 552 AD. Stamford Bridge 1066 AD. Hastings 1066 AD. Crecy 1346 AD. Poiters 1356 AD. Agincourt 1415 AD.

There are 8 pages of black and white sketches and photos showing the different types of troops mentioned in the book.

Bibliography is 10 pages of recommended reading divided into the corresponding chapters and for those interested add Turnbull's books plus those from Daisho Publications to those on Japan.

Another Featherstone classic. Written in his own recognisable style, with a wealth of information and inspiration for the wargamer. A must for any wargamer who, like me, enjoys flitting between periods
