National Defense University, Washington 1999, pp.134, 18 chapters on modern Colombia, obvious chapter to look at is “The Colombian Armed Forces and National Security” by Col. William C. Spracher, a thought provoking work for the way forward for Colombia and the U.S. Bolivar, by Georges Lafond & Gabriel Tersane, pub. Payot, Paris 1931, pp.346, text French, it would appear to be a general history of the man. Memorias del General O’Leary, Vol.1, edited by Simon B. O’Leary, pub. Gaceta Oficial, Caracas 1879, pp.645, this whole book is made up of letters by General Sucre from August 1820 through to September 1830, mainly to Bolívar, needs time to look though and dig out any relevant military data. Antonio Jose de Sucre: Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho, by Guillermo A. Sherwell, pub. Talleres de Cromotip, Caracas 1973, pp.236, 1st pub. Washington D. C. 1924, an interesting biography in English. Nuestros Proceres Navales, Vols. 1 & 2, by Francisco Alejandro Vargas, pub. Comandancia General de la Marina, Caracas 1983, pp.381 per volume, this work has 118 biographies of Naval and Marine Officers from Gran Colombia during the Independence Wars, a very useful set with some interesting illustrations. Memoirs of a Soldier of Fortune, by Gen. Rafael de Nogales, pub. Harrison Smith Inc., New York 1932, the author took part in the early days of the Mexican Revolution with General Flores Magon and fighting against President Gomez in Venezuela 1909-1914, he would end up fighting for the Turkish Army in WWI against the British and Arabs, a very interesting read on all of these subjects. Protagonistas en el Mar, by Mariano Sanchez Bravo, pub. Instituto de História Maritima, Quayaquil, Ecuador 1994, pp.221, illustrated, the navy of Ecuador from 1822-1970, useful photographs and some data. La Marina de Guerra en la Campaña de Esmeraldas 1913-1916, by Vice Admiral Carlos Monteverde Granados, pub. Instituto de História Maritima, Quayaquil, Ecuador 1993, pp.227, illustrated, never heard of this war before, some good data included. The Lure of Peru: Maritime Intrusion into the South Sea 1598-1701, by Peter T. Bradley, pub. Macmillan, London 1989, pp.232, 4 maps, and you thought it all happened in the Caribbean during this period, a well researched book on a neglected subject. The Great Rebel: Che Guevara in Bolivia, by Luis J. González & Gustavo A. Sánchez Salazar, pub. Grove Press, New York 1969, pp.254, illustrated, the authors have researched what was available to them and have produced an very informative account, hopefully later historians/authors will be able to include data that was not on hand in 1968. The Lost Paradise; An Account of the Jesuits in Paraguay 1607-1768, by Philip Caraman, pub. Sidgwick & Jackson, London 1975, pp.336, illustrated, 12 maps, a very useful work in English, if you already have Cunninghame Graham’s book “A Vanished Arcadia” 1st pub. 1901, then this title is a must. Martin T. McMahon; Diplomático en el estridor de las armas, by Arthur H. Davis, pub. Editora Litocolor, Asunción, Paraguay 1985, pp.543, illustrated, maps, U.S. Diplomat sent to Paraguay in 1868 to try and help with a peace treaty, and later testified to a Committee of the U.S. Congress about the war, Nov. 1869. Soldados de la Memoria: Imágenes y Hombres de la Guerra del Paraguay, by Miguel Angel Cuarterolo, pub. Planeta, Buenos Aires 2000, pp.165, fully illustrated, this work reproduces 90 contemporary photographs from this war, plus some coloured paintings and water-colours, many of the officer photographs are from visiting cards, a very good selection from the four combatant nations, a recommended source book. Cartas Sobre la Guerra del Paraguay, edited by Miguel Angel de Marco, pub. Academia Nacional de la História, Buenos Aires 1999, pp.198, reprinted are the letters from three Argentine doctors who took part in the Paraguayan War, an interesting insight into the progress of the war. General Garay: Heroe del Chaco, by Maj. Leandro Aponte B., pub. El Arte S.A., Asunción, Paraguay 1956, 1st pub. 1944, pp.249, illustrated, 3 maps, nice to see another Paraguayan General, other than Gen. Estigarribia, receiving this treatment for his conduct during the Chaco War. “Mis Memorias”, Regimiento de Caballería No.1 “Valois Rivarola”: Guerra del Chaco 1932-1935, by Capt. Fernando Silva, pub. Criterio Ediciones, Asunción, Paraguay 1989, pp.312, 25 maps, some very helpful text, the maps are useful too. História de los Orientales, Vol. II, by Carlos Machado, pub. Ediciones de la Banda Oriental, Montevideo 1986, pp.186, covers period 1830-1870. La Campaña Militar de 1897, edited by Col. Leonel Milone, pub. Departmento de Estudios Historicos, Montevideo 1999, pp.345, illustrated, maps, an extremely helpful book with numerous photographs and maps plus some coloured plates of uniforms, if I say that Alberto del Pino Menck was a co-ordinator for the book then we know that the standard will be high, do not know how you might obtain a copy other than going to Uruguay, recommended. When the Fighting is Over: Tumbledown; A Personal Story, by John & Robert Lawrence M.C., pub. Bloomsbury, London 1988, pp.194, illustrated, mainly dealing with the events which happened to this officer after he was wounded at Tumbledown. The Disappeared; Voices from a Secret War, by John Simpson & Jana Bennett, pub. Robson Books, London 1985, pp.405, illustrated, the internal war in Argentina from 1976-83 and the Falklands War, some interesting interviews. Soldados Argentinos Por La Paz, edited by Gen. Evergisto Arturo de Vergara, pub. Servicio Historic del Ejército, Buenos Aires 1997, pp.237, illustrated, maps, chapters on the many occasions when Argentine troops have been sent abroad to help the U.N. and also before in the Chaco War and the Peru-Ecuador War, the text is in Spanish and English, which is really helpful, I would have liked if the various units that were despatched were listed with each chapter but they are not, but that just gives me something else to look for in the future, if interested contact: Fundación Soldados, Azopardo 250 - 3er piso, 1328 Buenos Aires, Telefax 011-4346-6391. Premios Militares, by José Félix Martínez Lamela, pub. Instituto Genelogico Heraldico de Rosario, Buenos Aires 1995, pp.337, illustrated with 20 coloured plates, the book on Argentine medals for the Army, Navy and Air Force from 1971-1995, including wounded in action, Hero in Combat etc. the ribbons all look the same i.e. light blue-white-light blue, the ribbon bars do have additional white stripes or shields, but it can be a bit confusing even with this book, also included are the U.N. medals received.
