Mexico / Texas

By Terry Hooker

From Empire to Republic, by Arthur H. Noll, pub. A. C. McClurg & Co., Chicago 1903, pp.326, from Colonial rule up to the death of Juarez, I never seem to obtain enough data for the period of 1809-1836 so this work helps, just a bit.

Duel of Eagles; The Mexican and U.S. Fight for the Alamo, by Jeff Long, pub. William Morrow & Co. Inc., New York 1990, pp.420, illustrated, I think the title could have been better worded as the text is much better than I expected, the author received great help from Texan historians and the outcome is not one sided either, a good read.

Dueling Eagles: Reinterpreting the U.S.-Mexican War, 1846-1848, edited by R. V. Francaviglia and D. W. Richmond, pub. Texas Christian University Press, Fort Worth 2000, pp.181, illustrated, the eight chapters were originally presented at a 1996 symposium at the University of Texas and they focus on some little known aspects of the war, three chapters that interested me straight away were; 2) “But What Will England Say”, by Sam W. Haynes, 4) “Will the Regiment Stand It?” The 1st North Carolina Mutinies at Buena Vista, by R. B. Winders, 5) The War Between the United States and Mexico, by Miguel A. González Quiroga, all three gave a welcome insight into these subjects, the book is softback and priced at $17.00, obtainable from University Publishing, Drawer C, College Station, Texas 77843-4354 or at www.prs.tcu.edu/prs/.

Histoire du Mexique, by Henry B. Parkes, pub. Payot, Paris 1939, pp.422, a good general history of Mexico, first published in English.

La Campagne du Mexique 1861-1867, 4th Parte, pub. Club Français de la Figurine Historique, Paris 2000, pp.122, 19 b/w plates, 2 colour plates, the previous 3 parts dealt with the French Expeditionary Force and its Allies that were sent to Mexico with Maximilian and before, this part is only on Mexican troops that fought on the side of Juarez or Maximilian, I found it to be very helpful as it brings to light data from the French Army Archives “SHAT” and official reports which are always of help, recommended, if only to have so much Mexican data in one volume, write to: M. CLABAUT, 3 RUE du MASSIF-CENTRAL, 94800 VILLEJUIF, FRANCE, price is 85 French Francs plus postage, ask also for a list of other publications that are still available.

Memoires L’Intervention Française au Mexique, Vols. 1,2, & 3, by Col. C. Blanchot, pub. Librairie Emile Nourry, Paris, 1911, some illustrations plus one fold-out map, after Noix this is rated next best, Col. Blanchot was a member of staff under General Bazaine, so hopefully these volumes will have some interesting data.

Mes Souvenirs, Vol.2, by Gen. Du Barail, pub. Librairie Plon, Paris 1898, pp.512, pages 288-512 relate to his time in Mexico with the Chasseurs d’Afrique.

Souvenirs du Mexique, by Col. Lussan, pub. Librairie Plon, Paris 1908, pp.278, as a young Captain in the 2nd Régiment du Génie from 1863-67, has some helpful information on various officers names etc.

Quatre Ans Au Mexique; Souvenirs de Campagne et Impressions de Voyage, by A. Berthet, pub. H. & L. Casterman, Paris 1890, pp.244, as an officer in the 2nd Zouaves serving in Mexico.

Les Étapes de Nicolas Rameau; Mémoires d’un Sous-Officer 1855-1872, by Gabriel Ferry, pub. Librairie Hachette, Paris 1912, pp.238, illustrated, he was in the 12th Chasseurs a’Cheval in Mexico.

Les Chevauchées du Général Margueritte, by Commandant Grandin, pub. Eugene Ardant, Limoges 1880, pp.239, illustrated served as Colonel of the 12th Chasseurs a’Cheval in Mexico.

Histoire Populaire Contemporaine de la France, pub. Ch. Lahure, Paris 1866, pp.420, illustrated, pages 257-281 deal with Mexico, a nice illustration of General Lorencez.

Maimilien et Charlotte du Mexique; La Tragédie de l’Ambition, by André Castelot, pub. Librairie Académique Perrin, Paris 1977, pp.646, illustrated, the title tells it all.

La Reforma y el Segundo Imperio, by Agustin Rivera, pub. Ortega y Comp. Mexico 1904, pp.301, a diary of events from February 1854 to December 1868, clears up some dates when towns were occupied and by whom.

Les Officiers d’Artillerie de la Garde 1854-1870, by Louis Delperier, pub. Uniformes, No.59, Nov.-Dec. 1980, pp.17-22,

Gaston de Galliffet et ses uniformes, by Louis Delperier, pub. Uniformes, No.56, July-Aug. 1980, pp.35-39, this officer was the Lieutenant Colonel of the “Contre-Guérilla” from Sept. 1866 to April 1867, both articles are well illustrated with informative text.

Pancho Villa, by W. D. Lansford, pub. Stock, Paris 1967, first published U.S.A. 1965, some good photos, a copy of the English version would help me more as the text looks interesting.

Gringo Rebel: Mexico 1913-1914, by I. Thord-Gray, pub. University of Miami Press, 1960, pp.475, illustrated, a most enjoyable read, and yes I did manage to fully read this book, some very interesting anecdotes about the rebel army, try and obtain a copy from your library.
