Pre-Columbian and Conquest Armies of the 16th Century; 2: The Armies of the Aztec and Inca Empires, other native peoples of the Americas, and the Conquistadores 1450-1608, by Ian Heath, pub. Foundry Books Publications, 1999, pp.176, 247 figure illustrations, a very pleasant surprise for me, the numerous illustrations is certainly a bonus while the text has many helpful titbits of data trawled from the large Bibliography of books listed at the back, a must for anybody interested in this period. Hernan Cortes; Letters From Mexico, translated and edited by Anthony Pagden, pub. Yale University Press, 1986, 1st pub.1971, pp.549, illustrated, the five letters to Emperor Charles V between 1519 and 1526 are included in this work, these letters are often used as a base for people researching the conquest of Mexico, closely followed by the work of Bernal Diaz del Castillo, a good flowing text that leaves you wanting to know more. The Conquest of the Last Maya Kingdom, by Grant D. Jones, pub. Stanford University Press, 1998, pp.538, this detailed work covers the period from 1525 through to 1704 on a subject that is hard to find data on. Colonial Period: De Soto in the Land of Florida, by Grace King, pub. The Macmillan Company, New York, 1898, pp.326, illustrated, an easy to read book but should be used with modern day editions and translations of the memoirs that the author used back in 1898. Lieutenant Nun; Memoir of a Basque Transvestite in the New World, Catalina de Erauso, translated by Michele Stepto, pub. Beacon Press, Boston 1996, pp.80, sent in 1600, she escaped from a Basque convent dressed a man and managed to travel to Peru and Chile, joining the army in Peru, lucky they didn’t have too many baths or showers then, an interesting memoir. General James Grant: Scottish Soldier and Royal Governor of East Florida, by Paul D. Nelson, pub. University Press of Florida, 1993, pp.198, some details of British Florida from 1763-71 and the A.W.I. in this region. Book List
