Guide to Forces of
South West Africa and Angola

Introduction: 1915-1979

by Greg Novak

South Africa, cut off from the outside world by an arms embargo, produced an amazing number of vehicles during the period 1970-1990, of which but a few a re listed here. Scotia Models makes a rather complete line of 1/300th scale vehicles. These charts are used only for South Africa and her allies. Opposition forces use Warsaw Pact values from Combined Arms. SWAPO and ODP units have a a small arms range of 4/" instead of 8/16" and none of them receive te +1 DM.

Notes

1. The G4 was developed from the Israeli M-71 155mm gun howitzer.
2. South African artillery was upgunned after the results of the battles between Angola and South Africa in the mid-1970s. The South Africans were badly outgunned and did something about it.

Notes

1. The Vaikiri was developed after the South Africans encountered the Soviet BM-21 in the late 1970s. It was built both as a towed version and as SP mounted on the Samil 20 light truck. Used in the 1980s by the SDAF, but I can't find a reference to it being attached to units in SWA.

1. The ZPU-1 was found in the field mounted on the Samil 20 Light Truck, while the GAI 20 AC was usd on the Ystervark system. The other weapons were used as point defense weapons and not usually found in the field.

3. Ratels could be equipped with passive night vision device, but these were not usually used in the field.

Notes

1. Jakkal is South Africa's name for their "jeep" clone.
2. Samil 20 is SA light truck, Samil 50 is medium truck, Samil 100 is heavy truck. All have a mounting for a L AAMG over the co-driver's side of the cab. A semi-armored version, named the Kwevoel, exists for the Samil 20, 50, and 100. This models gives some protection to the cab and should be given a -1 modifier against small arms and indirect HE.

Notes

1. Due to lack of large numbers of transport helicopters, SA Army tended to use airborne troops on parachute drops on mission other countries would use helicopters.
2. SS-11 can be carried on Alouette II and III, but I didn't find any examples of such use in SWA in 1980-89.
3. SAAF has 12 Super Frelon helicopters, but I didn't find any examples of their use in SWA in 1980-89.
