An English firm, Stratagem, offers 25mm figures for two previously untouched "Colonial" Wars; the Maori Wars and the early African campaigns of exploration. Sculpting, detail and anatomy are at best adequate. What the figures lack in quality, however, is more than made up for in subject matter. The Maori range includes a variety of natives armed with stone clubs or double- barrelled shotguns (the Maoris' two favorite weapons). The British include officers and regular infantry as well as New Zealand volunteers. The nicest piece is a Royal Navy rocket battery complete with Boatswain in top hat and tail coat! The 16th Century Africa range includes an assortment of natives with various weapons. Most are rather briefly clad, but a few are quite interesting. The "quaintest" figures include a chief in European coat and wig(!) and an archer with a strange feat her-bedecked wooden(?) bowl-shaped hat. Weapons are very thin and subject to rough treatment in the mails, so I suggest ordering extra figures to compensate for breakage. The address is Stratagem, 18 Lovers Lane, Newark, Notts., NG24 1HZ, England. More Reviews
