Wargaming the 13th C.

Baltic Crusades

review by George Schneider

Paul Stein - Society of Ancients: 1984

This booklet marks the Society of Ancients' premiere effort to more thoroughly investigate a wargame-oriented historical topicthan is possible within the pages of SLINGSHOT. Paul Stein has conducted extensive research into the medieval Baltic campaigns of various Teutonic orders to convert and colonize that frontier. The result is a well-organized and readable booklet that provides the environment for the development of wargames and campaigns in that arena.

The booklet's introduction provides a fascinating glance into the geographical and anthropological background of the eastern Baltic. The body of this booklet defines the military considerations to account for and apply. There is a brief summary of the major and minor battles and skirmishes and a description of all of the military orders and indigenous tribes who played roles in these campaigns. one of the most useful pieces therein is a collection of photographs and accompanying texts of the various kinds of forts, walled towns and castles that played such a major role in the military exploits of that era. This contribution alone is worth the price (6.00 Sterling Airmail). The author concludes with recommended steps to follow to set up a campaign including available figures and a comprehensive bibliography.

Although the 13th Century Baltic campaigns may not be the most popular of wargaming periods, even for medieval specialists, this book is a must for all wargamers who seek to develop such a campaign. The Society promises to publish other such booklets on a variety of ancient and medieval topics; they are eagerly awaited.
