Stone Mountain

15mm ACW

review by Paul Koch

I don't like 15s. This is so pronounced that ourfriendly Editor (Dick Bryant) cautioned me about my prejudices before I wrote this review. His caution was misplaced. The new range of 15mm Civil War figures by Stone Mountain are simply the bestl5s I have ever seen. Mind you, they are not perfect. The rifles are too thick and too short, undoubted, to guard against breakage. Further some of the mounted figures are fartoo tall & on horses a shade too small. These minor objections aside therange has many fine points. For one thing, the master moulds are made with around 10 different heads. Thus, in the same pose bag you get several slightly different figures, some with beards of various lengths, others clean shaven. A very pleasing variety within the unit results.

I painted up some and even with my painting they look really good. Stone Mountain also makes casualty figures which dress up a unit's realism, or make fine little morale markers for games like "ON TO RICHMOND". Flagbearers come equipped with engraved or blank flags or with flagless poles as you wish. The range is so complete that one can totally equip a Civil War game with the one line. This is convenient yet unnecessary as the range is perfectly size compatible with MiniFig Super Detail line. I might add that at$4.25 for 20 infantry (with or without Command) they are also a bargain. Guns come 3 to a pack with crew; that's enough for a "JOHNNY REB" battery. These little fellows are so cute that I am tempted to raise a 15mm army of them myself. Joe Jassen of the "BLACK WATCH" also finds them just superb. RATING: .8; .7; .7; .9; 1; = 4.1 out of a possible 5.0.
