Irregular

25mm Norse Irish

review by George Schneider

Irregular Miniatures produces several medieval period armies in 25MM scale. Although some ranges depict popular subjects, such as Mongols, Franks, Vikings and Byzantines, other ranges are of more exotic armies not easily found otherwise. Recent ranges added to this line include Tibetans, Khmer & Burmese. Moreover, this manufacturer has adopted some rather unique practices that should add to this line's popularity; figures are offered with a choice of weapons per casting or with standards or musical instruments as options where appropriate. Sub-groups of religious figures, pilgrims, women and children also are available for various nationalities, and a wide variety of siege equipment and vehicles also may be obtained.

Figures tend toward the stocky side, though sculpting is sometimes shallow. Poses are more at-the-ready than in-action, though some faces appear to have warlike scowls intended, possibly, to frighten foes. Armor has some nice detail as do shields which enable gamers to paint bosses and heraldic detail easily. Figures received contained minimal flash, and even this is often seen to support extended features before painting and mounting. This line of figures may be approached without hesitation by beginners and will paint up to a formidable host. More advanced painters may have to demonstrate their expertise in order to bring out some detail to their own satisfaction. Mounted figures are cast separately.

A numerical rating of this series includes:

Animation.5 for foot.6 for mounted
Anatomy.8 for foot.7 for mounted
Detail.7 for foot.7 for mounted
Casting.8 for foot.8 for mounted
Paintability.7 for foot.7 for mounted
Total3.5 for foot3.5 for mounted

Irregular Miniatures may be obtained through Irregular Miniatures; 18 the Avenue; Norton, Malton, N. Yorkshire; Y017 9EF; ENGLAND. The illustrated catalog provides recommended 1000 point armies per set.
