Redoubt has added eight more figures to its Victoriana line. This time they’re Russians, and very nice Russians at that. Two are officers and the other six are riflemen. One officer is holding a sword and pointing a pistol, the other is pointing with his finger. The six riflemen poses are advancing, charging, standing/firing, kneeling/firing, standing/loading, and marching with rifle on shoulder. All six wear shapeless Russian tunics, baggy trousers, high boots, and soft caps with short bills and a small badge on the front. All but the officer with pistol also have blanket rolls over their shoulders, two ammo pouches, a haversack, and a water bottle. There’s very little negative that can be said about these: some visible mold lines and slightly flattened heads are about the extent of it. In almost every regard, they are excellent. One question arose, which is what happened to their bayonets? The sketches of the figures in Redoubt’s ad show all of the riflemen with bayonets, but only one of the review figures had one. The others have none (really, not even hanging from their belts) and they don’t look as if the bayonets broke off in shipping, so my assumption is that the final figures were altered slightly from the production sketches. These would be equally at home fending off Turks, marching into Afghanistan, or wading ashore in England (if you’re a fan of Redoubt’s alternate history Victoriana storyline). They measure 28M on the Barrett scale. Available for $1.70 each from Miniature Service Center, 1386 Portofino Drive, Yuba City, CA, 95993; www.miniatureservicecenter.com
