Wargamer's Guide to
1812-1815 War in America

Book Review

by Jim Birdseye

by Stuart Asquith, published by Jessica Productions 1993, 186 Torbay Road, Harrow, Middlesex, UK, HA2 9QL. Sixty-two photo copied pages with illustrations, maps, bibliography, and introduction. Stuart has divided the analysis into three major parts; background and history by each year of the war on the ground and land, American and British/Canadian military organizations, and wargaming the war. This work is from a decidedly British perspective.

The War of 1812, as we call it in America, is relatively new to the British. Indeed, the guide is slanted somewhat to a British point of view and some of the details and perceptions of the Americans are totally left out; but, after all, that was the cause of the war in the first place (the British were just not sensitive to American sensibilities). Stuart includes uniform information and some organizational data. Most of the uniforms and troop type illustrations are from the Wargames Foundry catalog.

The focus of the study is the Canadian front although he does cover New Orleans and the attack on Washington. This guide is a good start point for those interested in gaming the War of 1812. The Guide can be purchased from Jessica Productions, 186 Torbay Road, Harrow, Middlesex HA2 9QL (081-429- 4118) for six pounds ninety-nine pence plus shipping. Also contact American distributors.
