Wargames Illustrated

Industy News

I realize that reviewing a magazine that caters to miniatures can be about as popular with board wargamers as a round of Dungeons and Dragons. However, wargamers should be aware that many miniature wargaming magazines are now carrying historical articles that feature good orders of battles and maps.

Aside from enjoyable articles, the presentation of historical facts may help the novice designer or give some of the older hands a new view of their world. Wargames Illustrated, a British entry, is just such a magazine. Published monthly, the 58-page magazine features historical articles, miniature game replays, and book/miniature figure reviews. A recent issue featured, among others, a miniature game about the raid on Tito's Headquarters during May 1944, which could easily be transferred to a Squad Leader type game, and The North Carolina Coastal Operations during 1861/62, which had a great set of maps and a good order of battle.

Additionally featured was an article on game mechanics titled "Improving Matrix Games," and Franco-Prussian War Naval Lists (with a good order of battle of the various naval units and their capabilities). There was lots of other good stuff too numerous to mention here.
