'British Campaign Medals; Waterloo To The Gulf'. New edition, by Robert W.Gould. Arms and Armour Press, ISBN I85409-224-3, price, £ 12.99.

Although this book is primarily aimed at medal collectors, there is a good deal in it to appeal to the more general enthusiast. Basically, it's a description of British campaign medals, each illustrated, with brief notes on the campaigns for which they were awarded, and a listing of the bars issued with each medal. As such, it is a useful quick reference to the history of the British army over that period, and is particularly handy at sorting out some of the more obscure colonial campaigns; the India General Service medal, 1854-95, for example, was issued with up to twenty-three bars, and the incidents for which they were awarded are listed here. Some of the history is a little dated - no attempt to update old phonetic spellings of the names of the opposition here! - but it is an indispensable guide to anyone starting out in the medal field. It also includes a useful list of addresses of regimental and other military museums, and a rough guide to current medal prices. Useful.
