'But Burdens Shouldered; Anglo-Zulu War Graves and Memorials in the United Kingdom, by Tim Day, published by Ian Knight, c/o 12, Beaconsfield Road, Canterbury, Kent, CT2 711F, price £ 6 +£ 1 p+p.

'But Burdens Shouldered' is an unusual book on the Zulu War, in that its subject matter is entirely based in the UK. It is a county by county register of the graves and memmorials of the War veterans. Of course, many thousands of troops passed through Zululand during the war, andit has not been possible to either trace all of their graves, nor include them in this 47 page soft-cover publication; what's here are a representative selection, including most of the famous names. Even so, it's the result of years of work by the author, tracing the veterans' subsequent lives to their logical conclusion. In each case such personal details as are known about an individual are given, together with his date of death, and place of burial, and whether there are any other memorials known to him.

So, if you fancy finding out whether any Zulu War VC winners ended up in your neck of the woods, this is an excellent place to start. There are some nice little-known illustrations of scenes from the war, together with photographs of some of the individuals, graves and memorials concerned. All in all, it's a fascinating and rather poignant insight, not only into the Zulu War, but into the fabric of Victorian life.
