'Deeds of Valour: A Victorian Military And Naval Trilogy', by James W. Bancroft, ISBN 0 9524014-0-1, details from 280 Liverpool Road, Eccles, M30 0RZ.

James Bancroft's latest book is a sub-titled 'A Victorian Military And Naval Trilogy', and is a compendium of Victorian military heroism. It includes a useful chronology of VC awards, and a section on Sergeant Henry Gallagher, 'A Rorke's Drift Man'. Gallagher was a Sergeant in B Company, 2/24th at the time of the famous defence; this account includes a good deal of information on him gleaned from family sources, and includes some nice portraits. Finally, there is a section on 'Naval Battles and Disasters', which is gleaned largely from eye-witness accounts published in 'The Royal Magazine' (some more of which are scheduled to appear in future issues of 'Colonial Conquest'!). These include a survivor's account of the sinking of the Birkenhead troopship, wrecked at Danger Point off the Cape of Good Hope in 1852, whilst taking troops to the 8th Cape Frontier War, the fight between the Monitor and Merrimac in the ACW, and bombardment of Alexandria in 1882.
