'Lord Chelmsford's Zululand Campaign 1878-1879', edited by John Laband, published by Alan Sutton, ISBN 0-7509-0665-0 £ 30 This is a very meaty book, an essential purchase for anyone interested in the Zulu War, although inevitably the price will put some off. Lord Chelmsford was, of' course, the senior British commander in Zululand, and this book comprises an edited selection of his letters and official papers. They describe in depth the immense difficulties in planning for the coming campaign, the Isandlwana debacle anti the recriminations surrounding it, the subsequent fighting to relieve Eshowe, and at last the victorious march on Ulundi (oNdini). All of them were, of course, written as the events unfolded, and a masterly commentary and analysis of Chelmsford's role has been added by Professor Laband, whose work in the field should be known to) all students of the campaign. Not a book for light reading. but in important contribution to our understanding of the period. Reviews
