FRENCH BRIEFING

You, General Hulet, are marching back from Jablonski on 19th July to rejoin General Bazett at Strapete. You have completed your task of ensuring there are no enemy troops on the French line of communication to the North East of Strapete.

Your troops are fatigued as you have made two night marches and you left your bivouacs at dawn (0500 hours) today. It is now 1030 hours. You have decided to give your troops a well earned rest. Whilst breakfasting, the sound of cannon-fire is heard to the West at an estimated distance of 5 miles. You feel sure it is General Bazett, who will no doubt give the Russians another good beating.

After a halt, the length of which is decided on a dice throw, you will arrive at Sviatoy Kristov at the following time:

Order of March is: Cavalry, Yourself, Bonami's Brigade, Desailly's Brigade, Artillery. You have left two battalions (not part of the above Orbat) at Jablonski.

The upper contours of the hills are too steep for cavalry. Artillery may not elevate from the valley to reach the uppermost contours. The rivers have dried up to a trickle but, because of the steep banks, are no-go areas to cavalry and artillery. The streams, which run from East to West, are completely dry and can be crossed by cavalry at bad terrain speed.

RUSSIAN BRIEFING

You, General Panzerbeiter, have been ordered by General Chuikov to hold both hills East of Strapete. It is reported that there are strong French units to the North East which may arrive today, 24th July. If they were allowed unimpeded passage they could attack General Chuikov's rear. It is your task to prevent this.

Since 0800 hours this morning the sound of battle has been heard from the hills on the West side of Strapete where, obviously, General Chuikov is engaged with the French. It is now midday. Your brigade's Orbat, is as originally detailed above.

You may place your troops where you wish on the hills on both sides of the highway to Ratniki, but the Militia and the Ingermanland Regiment must start on the West slopes of the Southern hills. They may not move until the French are sighted. The location of the remainder should be marked on a sketch map to be handed to the Umpire. Do not place troops on the table until the enemy can sight you.

Suggested Command and Courier Rules

An orders system can be simulated in two ways. The first is by the use of Order Markers which are laid down behind the brigade to which they apply. The following orders are considered all that are necessary and are issued by the appropriate level commander using pre-marked cards: ADVANCE TO, DEFEND, WITHDRAW TO, MANOEUVRE TO, PURSUE, RESERVE and, for artillery units: FIRE ON. The second way is by giving a brigade commander a Radius of Command -- usually 300 yards.

Units out of Command Radius may not change formation, even in a firefight, or deviate from previous orders. Command Radius is not necessary for division commanders upwards as the time taken to transmit an order will effectively fulfil the command function.

COURIERS: First calculate time taken to travel the distance required to deliver the message. Moves are: Good terrain - 1300 yards , Bad Terrain - 1000 yards, Road - 2000 yards. When the calculated time has passed, throw 1D1O. Score 1-3 = Message not arrived. Ten minutes later, throw again, adding 1 to die throw. If still in the range 1-3, Message not arrived so, ten minutes later, throw again, adding 2 to the die throw. If still in the range 1-3, Message not arrived and messenger dead.
