Journal of Horace St. Paul
1757: Waiting on Events

August 4, 1757

Translated and Edited With Additional Materials By Neil Cogswell

A reinforcement of unknown strength has reached the King of Prussia, but we cannot detect any difference in the extent of his camp.

Yesterday, General Nádasdy had an interview with His Royal Highness and Marshal Daun. Today, he has gone with all his corps towards the right flank of the Prussians. He has taken an advantageous post, but it is some way from Lobau. He intends to send his detachments as far as Stolpen and to the passes of all the high ground; we believe that this will impede the arrival of Prussian convoys. Today, they have already carried off 40 wagons loaded with provisions and 8 horses that were on their way from Dresden.

Several hundred horses arrived from Moravia today; these are remounts for the heavy cavalry and dragoons.

His Royal Highness, once again, sent out the Quartermaster-General, Count Guasco, to reconnoitre a camp from which we would be better able to tighten our grip upon the Prussians. He confirmed the report that Brigadier Montazet had made concerning the strength and situation of the camp of the Prussian army.
